CHAPTER SEVEN

“You blew up the bridge?” Rett knew he shouldn’t have been surprised—after all, they’d taken Henri with them—but hearing about the adventure made everything feel different than being there.

“It worked,” Henri replied with a shrug.

“Of course, we had to go twenty miles out of our way to get home because there wasn’t another bridge closer,” Kane noted.

“But we did get back,” Ridge pointed out.

Rett and the others gathered at the table in Rune Keep around a dinner of hearty onion soup, freshly baked bread, cheese, and figs. Malachi had a bottle of whiskey on the table, and they toasted another day they all survived.

Rett hung back, listening intently as Ridge, Kane, and Henri took turns recounting their adventure. They made a good team. Even though Noxx got away, breaking the Witch Lord’s hold on the regency council candidates mattered, and they still didn’t know what was in the spelled box. Rett was just grateful none of them had been hurt.

Their success didn’t ease the discomfort he felt hearing about the job as a bystander. Deep down, Rett couldn’t help feeling replaced.

It doesn’t change anything. Kane needs a hunting partner who can leave the tower more often than Malachi dares. Ridge needs someone to have his back who isn’t going to get lost in his own head. Ridge and I still have a lifetime of being best friends. Kane and Malachi are together.

The new hunting team didn’t change anything—except that it did.

“Provided Noxx told the truth about the garnet, I’ll figure out how to smash it, and that should break Makary’s hold on the candidates for the Regency Council,” Malachi recounted. “Meanwhile, Rett and I paid another visit to Brother Tom.”

Ridge looked sharply at Rett. “You left the tower?” Rett knew that worry made his partner’s tone sharp and angry. His head swiveled, and he glared at Malachi. “You let him leave?”

“We stayed here,” Rett assured him, eager to make peace. “At least, physically.”

Ridge’s eyes widened. “You soul-traveled?”

“You did your part; I did mine. Malachi came along for the ride, so it wasn’t all on me. We were fine.”

“I’d say it was well worth the effort,” Malachi interposed, no doubt sensing the rising tension. He started to recount what they learned at Green Knoll, with Rett picking up pieces of the story as they went along.

“You’re sure Brother Tom is real?” Kane glanced from Rett to Malachi and back again.

“How is that even possible?” Ridge demanded.

Rett’s temper flared. “You think the crazy guy made it up? I have a witness. Malachi saw everything.”

“I don’t think you’re crazy—”

“Just too damaged to know what’s real and what isn’t?” Rett threw down the challenge, satisfied when Ridge flinched.

“That isn’t—”

“It’s exactly what you meant,” Rett snapped. “If you don’t trust me, then trust Malachi.”

“What do you think of the visit to Brother Tom?” Kane put in, an unlikely peacekeeper. The set of his jaw suggested that he’d have words with Malachi in private about the risk, but he seemed to sense that diffusing the tension was essential.
